Life is never certain, so you have to learn to trust your instincts and have faith in your choices. Then move forward with them.

Every sunrise brings with it a multitude of choices, each a brushstroke on the canvas of our lives. The decision to rise from our slumber or remain in the warmth of our beds, the choice to extend a helping hand or to hurriedly pass by—these seemingly mundane decisions define the rhythm of our existence. Life is a tapestry woven with the threads of our choices, a continuous dance between possibilities. While we cannot dictate the actions of others, we hold the reins to our reactions, behaviors, and responses. In every circumstance, we always have a choice.

It’s easy to fall into the illusion that circumstances can strip us of our agency. Some find themselves ensnared in daunting situations, convincing themselves that they lack a choice and succumbing to a sense of helplessness. Yet, even in the face of adversity, the decision to believe in one’s powerlessness is, ironically, a choice. Unbeknownst to many, the acknowledgment of our choices—no matter how limited they may seem—empowers us to take action and effect change. It’s a subtle realization that, in every circumstance, we retain the freedom to choose our path.

Choosing to act requires courage. The path of change is often shrouded in uncertainty and fear. However, without proactive choices, life remains stagnant. Waiting for external forces to shape our destiny is a passive approach that denies the agency inherent in our existence. Life is yours to mold, and the future is shaped by the choices you make today. Rather than entrusting your well-being to others, seize control of your destiny and shape a future that resonates with your aspirations.

A better tomorrow is crafted from the choices we make today. Every decision is an investment in the future, and the sum of these investments determines the richness of our lives. When faced with multiple viable options, choose wisely based on your knowledge and experiences. Embrace the uncertainty, armed with the confidence that stems from making choices aligned with your values. Move forward with optimism, for even if a choice proves to be imperfect, the lessons gleaned from it become the stepping stones to growth and resilience.

The fear of making the wrong choice should not paralyze you. Embrace the possibility of failure as a catalyst for learning and growth. Each misstep is an opportunity to refine your choices, to become wiser, and to forge ahead with newfound knowledge. Choosing to step into the arena of life, embracing both triumphs and failures, is a declaration that you refuse to be a helpless victim. It is a commitment to navigating your journey with purpose and resilience.

As a new week unfolds, take a deliberate look at your life. Assess the choices that can elevate your existence and make them with intention. Recognize that, in every moment, you hold the brush that paints the masterpiece of your life. You always have a choice—choose to create a life that reflects your values, aspirations, and the boundless potential within you.

What Lucky People Do Differently

What Lucky People Do Differently

People who call themselves lucky behave measurably differently from people who call themselves unlucky. The difference is four habits, and all four can be copied.

Some hold that luck is settled by fate, or that certain people are born under a fortunate star. At a glance there seems to be something in it, because some lives do visibly overflow while others do not. The dictionary calls luck a force that brings good fortune. If it is a force, the interesting question is whether it can be reached deliberately.

Richard Wiseman, a psychologist at the University of Hertfordshire, spent years studying people who described themselves as consistently lucky alongside people who described themselves as consistently unlucky. He found the two groups behaving differently in four consistent ways. None of the four is a talent. All of them are habits, which is the useful part.

They listen to the hunch

The people who considered themselves lucky reported trusting their instinct on relationships and on career decisions markedly more often than the unlucky group did. Instinct is fast pattern recognition drawn from experience, which is why it is worth hearing, and also why it is unreliable in situations you have never met before.

They expect the outcome to be good

Expectations shape effort long before they shape results. Somebody who expects a conversation to go well opens it differently, stays in it longer, and asks the question the other person was waiting for. The expectation does not cause the outcome. It changes the behaviour that produces the outcome.

They take small steps rather than waiting

Almost nothing arrives overnight, and the size of a goal is what makes people postpone it. The reliable method is unglamorous. Take the thing one small step at a time, and take the step this week.

They stay in the way of opportunity

Calculated risks, unfamiliar places, new people, and a habit of saying yes to the thing whose outcome you cannot predict. Luck is largely a numbers game about exposure. A person who meets four new people a month is not more blessed than a person who meets none. He simply has more chances for something to land.

They ask

Those who get what they want are, with some regularity, the ones who asked for it. Make the request without apology. If the answer is no, treat it as a no for now rather than a verdict, and ask again later at a better moment.

And they pay attention

Most of daily life passes unobserved. Watching it closely is the change that makes the other five possible. What is rewarded here, and what is quietly punished? Who actually decides? Truth shows up in what people do far more reliably than in what they say.

One caution on the last point about instinct. If a job pays nearly twice what another pays and leaves you feeling dead, that feeling is real information about fit and worth weighing. It is not, on its own, a financial plan.

In the realm of human experience, there exists a profound and often underestimated source of joy—the act of writing. While many view writing as a mere tool for communication or a task assigned in academic settings, its unexpected joys can be transformative. This essay explores the myriad ways in which writing can bring unexpected delight, weaving through scenarios that showcase the magic inherent in putting pen to paper or fingers to keyboard.

Here are a few scenarios:

The Therapeutic Pen

Imagine a scenario where someone, burdened by the weight of their thoughts and emotions, turns to writing as a form of catharsis. As they pour their innermost feelings onto the blank canvas of a page, a sense of relief washes over them. The act of writing becomes a therapeutic journey, allowing them to confront and process their emotions. In this scenario, the unexpected joy of writing lies in its ability to provide solace and healing.

Creativity Unleashed

Picture a budding writer struck by a surge of inspiration in the most unlikely of places—an overcrowded subway, perhaps. Fingers dancing across a smartphone screen, they weave a tale that had been waiting to be told. The unexpected joy here lies in the discovery of creativity amidst the mundane. Writing becomes a gateway to a realm where imagination knows no bounds, reminding us that inspiration can strike at any moment.

“Writing is not merely a tool for communication; it’s a voyage into the unexpected realms of joy, where the mundane becomes extraordinary, emotions find solace, and creativity dances freely on the page.”

Connecting Through Words

Consider a scenario where two individuals, separated by physical distance or cultural barriers, find a common ground through the written word. Whether through letters, emails, or shared documents, the act of writing becomes a bridge that connects souls across vast expanses. The joy here is unexpected yet profound—the realization that words can forge bonds and build bridges between disparate worlds.

Rediscovering Lost Memories

Envision someone stumbling upon an old journal tucked away in a dusty attic. As they leaf through the pages, they rediscover moments long forgotten—joyful anecdotes, heartfelt confessions, and snapshots of a younger self. The unexpected joy of writing, in this case, lies in its time-traveling ability, allowing one to revisit the past and rediscover the treasures hidden in the written word.

The Power of Persuasion

Think of a scenario where an individual, armed with a pen and a persuasive argument, brings about positive change in their community. Through eloquent writing, they rally support for a cause close to their heart, mobilizing people to take action. The unexpected joy here lies in the realization that writing is not only a personal endeavor but a powerful tool for influencing positive change on a larger scale.

The unexpected joy of writing is a multifaceted gem that reveals itself in various scenarios. From the therapeutic release of emotions to the exhilaration of creative expression, the act of writing transcends its utilitarian functions. It is a journey of self-discovery, a conduit for connection, and a catalyst for positive change. As we navigate the labyrinth of words, let us savor the unexpected joys that writing brings, for in each sentence lies the potential for a delightful surprise.

Happiness Is Not A State You Arrive At

Happiness Is Not A State You Arrive At

The promise of permanent happiness is the reason most people quietly conclude they have failed at it.

The promise in the usual version of this advice is the problem with it. Permanent happiness is not a condition anybody reaches and then holds, and setting it as the target makes an ordinary Tuesday feel like a failure.

What does exist is a short list of practices that reliably raise the floor. None is dramatic. All of them are dull to read about and difficult to keep, which is the honest reason so few people keep them.

People, before anything else

The Harvard Study of Adult Development has followed the same people since 1938, which makes it the longest running study of its kind. Its finding has held for eight decades. The strongest predictor of how well a life goes is not income, achievement or health at the start. It is the quality of a person’s close relationships. Nothing else on this list comes close, and most of us spend our attention on the items that matter less.

In the vast cosmos of life, our purpose is a unique constellation, waiting for us to connect the dots and illuminate the path of our joyous cosmic journey.

Notice what is already working

Dissatisfaction runs on comparison, so the count of what you have registered matters more than what you actually hold. Working systems are silent, which is precisely why they go unnoticed. Making yourself name a few of them daily changes nothing outside you and a good deal inside.

Something to be useful for

Purpose does not have to be large. It has to be specific, and it has to involve somebody other than yourself. A person with a reason to get up has a structure that holds on the days when the mood does not.

Kindness, for the plainest reason

Doing something for another person reliably lifts the doer, and the effect is larger when the act is small, direct and unannounced. This is the cheapest item on the list and the most immediately available.

Stay a beginner at something

Learning holds attention in a way that comfort does not. Being visibly bad at something new is unpleasant for a fortnight and then becomes the most interesting part of the week.

Be where you are

Most unhappiness is either a rehearsal of something finished or a rehearsal of something that has not happened. Neither is available to be acted on. The present is the only part of it you can do anything about.

What to expect from all this

Not a permanent state. A higher ordinary, and a shorter recovery when something knocks you down. That is a smaller promise than the one usually made here, and unlike the larger one, it is true.

In a world that often glorifies constant connectivity and FOMO (Fear of Missing Out), there is a serene pleasure in the art of missing out—the JOMO (Joy of Missing Out). Let’s explore the unexpected beauty found in moments of solitude, intentional disconnection, and the liberating power of saying no.

Savoring Moments of Solitude

In the hustle and bustle of modern life, there is a profound joy in missing out on the noise and chaos. Choosing solitude over a crowded agenda allows us to savor quiet moments, reconnect with ourselves, and find joy in the simplicity of being alone with our thoughts.

Finding joy in missing out, where the quiet moments whisper louder than the crowded gatherings.

The Power of Intentional Disconnection

In a hyper-connected world, deliberately disconnecting from the virtual chatter is an act of reclaiming control over our time and mental space. The joy of missing out on the constant stream of notifications is the freedom to immerse ourselves in the present, away from the digital clamor.

Finding Freedom in Saying No

The joy of missing out extends to the liberating ability to say no without guilt. Saying no to commitments that don’t align with our priorities is an act of self-care. It opens up space for the things that truly matter, fostering a sense of freedom and control over our choices.

Embracing the Present Moment

FOMO often stems from the fear that something better might be happening elsewhere. The joy of missing out is rooted in embracing the present moment wholeheartedly, recognizing that the richness of life lies in the here and now, not in the perpetual pursuit of what could be.

Cultivating Meaningful Connections

The joy of missing out on superficial engagements allows us to cultivate meaningful connections. Choosing quality over quantity in our relationships ensures that the time we invest is dedicated to those who genuinely contribute to our well-being and happiness.

Creating Space for Personal Growth

By intentionally missing out on the non-essential, we create space for personal growth. The joy lies in using this time to pursue passions, learn new skills, and invest in self-improvement, fostering a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment.

Rediscovering the Art of Slow Living

In a world that often races against the clock, the joy of missing out is synonymous with the art of slow living. It’s about relishing the unhurried pace, appreciating the details, and finding contentment in a life that unfolds at its own rhythm.

In a culture that often celebrates busyness, the joy of missing out is a gentle reminder that true happiness lies not in the quantity of experiences but in the quality of our engagements. It’s about cherishing the freedom to choose where we invest our time and energy, finding joy in the spaces deliberately left unfilled.
