Alternate-Nostril Breathing, Step by Step

Alternate-Nostril Breathing, Step by Step

A three-minute breath to steady the mind — here is the exact sequence.

Alternate-nostril breathing, or nadi shodhana, is one of the simplest ways to calm a busy mind, and it needs nothing but your hand and a few minutes. Here is the whole sequence.

The steps

Sit comfortably with the spine easy and legs crossed. Rest the left hand on the left knee and bring the right hand up toward the nose. Breathe all the way out, then close the right nostril with your right thumb. Breathe in through the left nostril, then close the left nostril too with your fingers. Open the right nostril and breathe out through it. Breathe in through the right, close it, open the left, and breathe out through the left. That full round — out and in on each side — is one cycle. Continue gently for up to five minutes, and always finish by breathing out on the left side.

Why it works

Slow, even breathing through alternating nostrils steadies the flow of breath and, with it, the mind — nudging the body toward its calm, parasympathetic side. In yogic terms it is described as clearing the body’s subtle energy channels; in plain terms, it is a reliable off-switch for a racing head that you can use before a meeting, before bed, or any time you feel scattered.

Patents: Owning An Idea

Patents: Owning An Idea

A patent is a bargain with the state. You publish how it works, and in return nobody else may use it for a while.

Patents: Owning An Idea

The everyday phrase is that a patent protects an idea. It does not, and the distinction matters.

Ideas are not ownable. What can be protected is a specific solution to a technical problem, described in enough detail that someone skilled in that field could build it.

The bargain

This is the part people miss. A patent requires full public disclosure. You explain exactly how it works, and the state grants you an exclusive right for a limited period, typically twenty years.

The reasoning is that society gets the knowledge either way, and would rather have it published now than kept secret indefinitely.

Three tests

It must be new, meaning not previously disclosed anywhere, including by you. It must involve an inventive step, meaning not obvious to a competent practitioner. And it must be capable of industrial application.

The first test catches more inventors than any other. Presenting your idea publicly before filing can destroy your own novelty.

A right to stop, not a right to use

Commonly misunderstood. A patent lets you prevent others from using your invention. It does not guarantee you can use it yourself, since your invention may sit on top of someone else’s still-valid patent.

It is territorial and it is expensive

There is no world patent. Protection is country by country, each with its own filing, fees and renewals. Costs run over years and a granted patent is worth only what you are prepared to spend enforcing it.

Sometimes secrecy is better

If a process cannot be reverse-engineered from the product, keeping it confidential may beat publishing it in exchange for twenty years. That is a commercial judgement, and it is the first question worth asking.

Dealing With A Bully At Work

Dealing With A Bully At Work

Workplace bullying is rarely shouting. It is usually exclusion, credit-taking and quiet undermining, which is what makes it hard to name.

Dealing With A Bully At Work

The word conjures raised voices, and that version is now rare in offices. What persists is quieter and harder to point at. Information withheld until it is too late. Being left off the invitation. Work criticised in front of others and praised to nobody. Credit relocated.

Each incident is small enough to sound petty if described alone. The pattern is the thing, and the pattern is what you have to make visible.

Write it down from today

This is the step people skip and later regret. Date, time, what happened, who else was present, in plain factual language with no adjectives.

Six weeks of that turns a feeling into a document. Without it you are relying on memory against someone who will describe every instance as a misunderstanding, and separately, each one is.

Move things into writing

If instructions keep changing, confirm them by email afterwards. Just to confirm what we agreed. Two lines, no accusation, sent every time.

People who operate in ambiguity dislike this a great deal, and it usually reduces the behaviour on its own, because it removes the deniability the behaviour depends on.

Name it once, calmly, if you can

Sometimes it is worth saying directly. When you talk over me in meetings I lose the thread, so I would like to finish my point. Specific, unemotional, no diagnosis of their character.

It occasionally works. When it does not, you have another entry for the record, and you have shown you attempted to resolve it, which matters later.

Escalate on evidence, not feeling

Take the log, not the grievance. A pattern with dates is difficult to wave away. An account of how you have been made to feel, however true, is easy to.

And know your limit in advance

Decide now what you will do if nothing changes in three months, while you are still clear-headed. People who leave this undecided tend to absorb far more than they meant to, and it costs them more than the job was worth.

Revamp Your Resume

Revamp Your Resume

Yours is read for about thirty seconds by someone holding forty others. Almost every rule follows from that single fact.

Revamp Your Resume

Start from how it is actually read. A person with a stack of applications and a shortlist to produce by lunch. Not an admirer. A filter, working at speed.

Every useful rule about resumes falls out of that.

Short, because long does not get read

Two pages for most careers, three if you are twenty years in with genuine range. Beyond that you are not being thorough, you are making someone else do your editing.

The early roles compress hardest. Your first job needs a line, not a paragraph.

Results, not responsibilities

Responsible for vendor management says nothing. Everyone in that seat was responsible for vendor management. Consolidated forty suppliers to twelve and cut spend by a fifth says what you were like in the seat.

Numbers do the work here. Even rough ones. Scale, direction, timeframe.

Tailor the top third

Rewriting the whole document per application is unsustainable and unnecessary. The top third does the deciding. Make the summary and the most recent role speak to this posting, and let the rest stand.

Write for the machine as well as the person

Most applications pass through screening software before a human sees them. That software matches words. If the posting says stakeholder management and you wrote client liaison, you may not survive to the human stage.

Use their vocabulary where it is honest to do so. A plain reverse-chronological layout, no text inside images, no tables, no columns that reorder when parsed.

What to leave out

Photographs, date of birth, marital status, references available on request, and any adjective you cannot evidence. Hard-working and detail-oriented are claims every weak candidate also makes, which is why they carry nothing.

Cut anything that would be true of anyone in your role. What remains is your resume.

Conversation Starters For Introverts

Conversation Starters For Introverts

The difficulty is rarely the talking. It is the opening, and openings can be prepared like anything else.

Conversation Starters For Introverts

Introversion is not shyness and it is not dislike of people. It is a different relationship with stimulation, and it means social effort draws down a battery that extroverts recharge from.

Which changes what advice is useful. Just put yourself out there is not it.

Prepare the opening, not the conversation

The hard part is almost always the first thirty seconds. Once a conversation is running most introverts do well, often better than the room average, because they listen properly.

So the preparation should be narrow. Three or four openings you would genuinely be happy to use, ready in advance.

Use the shared situation

The easiest opening is the thing you are both in. How do you know the host. Have you been to one of these before. What brought you to this session.

No cleverness required and the other person always has an answer, because they are thinking about the same room.

Ask, then follow

Introverts tend to be good at this and undervalue it. People find a good listener memorable, and being memorable requires no performance at all.

One warning. Questions without any disclosure become an interview. Offer something of your own every third exchange.

Aim for two conversations, not the room

Working a room is an extrovert’s goal and a miserable target for anyone else. Two proper conversations is a successful evening, and it produces more than twenty introductions.

Plan the exit

Knowing you will leave at nine makes arriving at seven far easier. Decide in advance, and give yourself the quiet afterwards without treating it as a failure of stamina.

Meeting Your Deadlines

Meeting Your Deadlines

Missed deadlines are usually not a time problem. They are an estimating problem, and estimating can be fixed.

Meeting Your Deadlines

People who miss deadlines are rarely lazy. Most of them worked hard and simply believed, honestly, that it would take less time than it did.

The planning fallacy is universal

Asked how long something will take, people systematically underestimate, and knowing about the tendency does not correct it. Experienced professionals do it about as much as anyone else.

The reason is that we estimate from an imagined smooth run. No interruptions, no waiting on someone, nothing turning out more complicated than expected. That version has never happened.

Estimate from history, not imagination

The single most effective correction is asking how long the last similar thing took, and using that number instead of your instinct.

People resist because this time feels different. It is not, and the record is more reliable than the feeling.

Break it until the pieces are boring

A large task attracts a vague estimate. Broken into pieces small enough to be dull, the estimates get realistic, and the total is usually considerably larger than the original guess.

That total is the useful number, and it is the one people avoid producing because it is unwelcome.

Add the waiting

Most overruns are not work time. They are the two days waiting for a review, the week waiting for access. Put those in the plan explicitly, because they are the largest single source of slippage.

Renegotiate early or not at all

A deadline flagged as at risk two weeks out is a manageable conversation. The same news on the day is a failure.

Everyone knows this and almost nobody does it, because the early conversation feels like admitting something. It is the cheapest thing you will do all month.

Certifications That Actually Move A Career

Certifications That Actually Move A Career

Some letters after your name open doors. Many are expensive wallpaper. The difference is usually who is asking for them.

Certifications That Actually Move A Career

Going back to study is the most common answer to a stalled career, and the least examined. People pick a certification the way they pick a queue at the airport, by what looks like it is moving.

Ask who requires it before you ask what it teaches

A certification is worth what the market makes it worth. The ones that pay are the ones that appear as a requirement rather than a preference in job postings, or that a regulator, a client or a tender demands.

That is a checkable fact, not a matter of opinion. Search fifty relevant postings and count how many name it. Under five and you are buying knowledge, which is fine, but do not expect it to move your salary.

Regulated fields reward them most

Where an employer carries liability, a recognised credential transfers some of that risk, and they will pay for it. Safety, accounting, project delivery, security, healthcare, aviation. In fields with no such exposure, a portfolio of work almost always beats a certificate.

The renewal is part of the price

Very few people cost this properly. Annual maintenance fees, continuing education hours, the time to earn them, and the re-examination when the body updates its syllabus. Over a decade the upkeep often exceeds what the exam cost. Add it up before you commit, not after.

Sequence beats collection

Three certificates pointing at one role read as intent. Seven pointing in different directions read as drift, and interviewers notice. Every credential should make the next thing on your CV more plausible than the last one did.

The uncomfortable truth

A certification gets you past a filter. It very rarely gets you the job. What it buys is a conversation you would not otherwise have had, and what you do in that conversation is still entirely down to what you can actually do.

Tips & Tricks

Improve Your Reading Skills

Improve Your Reading Skills

Reading more is not the same as reading better. The difference is mostly in what you read and what you do afterwards.

Improve Your Reading Skills

The usual advice is to read a lot, and volume alone does surprisingly little. Someone reading forty undemanding books a year may finish the year no different from how they started.

Read above your level

The books that change how you think are the ones that are slightly too hard. If everything you read is comfortable, you are practising a skill you already have.

Slightly too hard means you occasionally reread a paragraph and finish a chapter tired. That is the correct sensation. Considerably too hard is not, and there is no prize for finishing something you did not follow.

Reading speed is mostly a myth

Speed reading courses reliably increase words per minute and reliably reduce comprehension by a similar amount. For anything worth reading, the slow part is understanding, and understanding does not compress.

Where you can save time is in choosing not to finish. Abandoning a book at page forty is a skill, not a failure.

Do something after the last page

This is the step that separates reading from having read. Five minutes writing what the argument was, in your own words and without opening the book.

Uncomfortable, and it is the point. What you cannot reproduce, you did not take.

Read across, not just along

Two books that disagree teach more than five that agree. The friction is where thinking happens, and a field only becomes visible once you have seen more than one account of it.

Keep a note of what struck you

Not a summary. The two or three lines that stopped you. Revisited a year later, that list is worth more than the shelf it came from.

Relationships

Five Conversations Every Couple Should Have

Five Conversations Every Couple Should Have

Better had early, in the calm, than discovered later in the middle of the thing itself.

Five Conversations Every Couple Should Have

Most couples discuss where to live and what to eat and never get to the questions that actually cause trouble later. Not from avoidance exactly. The questions simply do not come up until they arrive as a crisis.

Money, in specifics

Not are we good with money. What debts exist, what each of you earns, what you consider a reasonable amount to spend without consulting, whether accounts are shared, and what you are each saving towards.

Financial disagreement is among the most common sources of serious conflict, and almost all of it traces to assumptions never stated.

Children, including the possibility of none

Whether, when, how many, and what happens if it turns out to be difficult. Also who is expected to step back from work, because that assumption is frequently held by both people in incompatible forms.

Parents and obligation

Particularly here, where the expectation of caring for ageing parents is often assumed rather than discussed. Where they will live, who provides, and what happens when the needs of two families collide.

This one surfaces suddenly and at the worst possible time if it has never been raised.

What each of you needs when upset

Some people need to talk immediately. Others need an hour alone and are then fine. Neither is wrong and each reads the other as rejection.

Ten minutes of conversation about this prevents a decade of the same argument.

What ambition looks like in ten years

Not goals. Appetite. One person planning a quieter life and the other planning to build something demanding is workable, and only if both know.

How to have them

Not during an argument. Not as an interrogation. One at a time, on an ordinary evening, when nothing is at stake.

Relationships

Being There In A Friend’s Bad Hour

Being There In A Friend’s Bad Hour

The instinct is to fix it or to find the bright side. Both are usually for your comfort rather than theirs.

Being There In A Friend's Bad Hour

When someone you care about is in trouble, the urge to make it better is immediate and it is where most of the mistakes come from.

Do not add your two cents

The advice arrives fast and it is nearly always premature. Someone who has just lost a job does not need a strategy in the first hour. They need the hour.

Advice offered too early carries an implicit message. That the feeling is a problem to be got past rather than something to be had.

Skip the silver lining

Everything happens for a reason. At least you have your health. These are said kindly and they land as dismissal, because they ask the person to feel better for the comfort of the listener.

The braver response is to say the true thing. This is genuinely bad and I am sorry.

Do not compare

The same thing happened to me is meant to build connection and usually redirects the conversation to you. If a comparison is useful, they will ask.

Be specific about help

Let me know if you need anything places the work on the person least able to do it. They will not call.

I am bringing food on Thursday, tell me if that does not suit is a real offer, and it can be accepted with a nod.

Come back in three weeks

The part almost everyone misses. Support arrives in a wave and disappears, and the difficult stretch usually begins after it does, when everyone else has moved on and the person is alone with it.

A message a month later, and again after that, is worth more than everything offered in the first week. It costs nothing and almost nobody does it.
